Pete Cahall, the principal of D.C.'s Woodrow Wilson High School – the city's largest public high school – made a surprise announcement to his students today during the school's second-annual LGBT pride event.
"I just turned 50 a couple of weeks ago, and I just kept saying [to myself], I'm tired of hiding," Cahall told reporters after revealing to students that he was a proud, gay man. His unexpected words were received by students with rousing cheers and astonished, joyful looks in a beautiful, stirring moment.
Naturally, Westboro Baptist Church has announced that it plans to protest the school on June 9 for holding a dynamic LGBT pride event,
and over 1,000 students have volunteered to participate in a silent protest to protect the school's LGBT students, and now, its proud, gay principal.
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray, who was standing alongside Cahall as he made his surprise announcement, and who publicly congratulated Cahall for his bravery and integrity, had a simple message for those who planned to spread their hatred at the school:
In my best biblical reference: they can go straight to hell.
Seems not all things in D.C. are broken after all.
