Terri Lynn Land, the worst candidate in all of Michigan.
Gary Peters' campaign blog is
having some fun with a survey of the state's political experts and insiders showing that 65 percent of participants—including 55 percent of Republicans—say Republican Terri Lynn Land is running the worst campaign among the top ticket candidates in the state. The Denno
survey [subscription required] was commissioned by MIRS and polled 353 respondents.
Peter's campaign runs down a few of the reasons Land is failing so hard. One is her really, really embarrassingly bad performance right out of the gate in the general election, when she flubbed so many questions at a policy forum, she ended up throwing up her hands in desperation and saying "I can't do this!" Apparently that became the candidate's motto, because she decided eventually to basically disappear from the public eye and any more events that could prove embarrassing.
Peter's campaign also notes that Land has a number of campaign and financial controversies she's been unable or unwilling to answer. For example, where did the $3 million she loaned her campaign come from, when none of her financial disclosure forms show her having that kind of money. That question has been out there for a couple of months now, with no real response from Land. There's also the little problem of her declaring her campaign "talked to a lot of [Super PACs]. They are committed to Michigan." Campaigns coordinating with Super PACs is, of course, not legal.
Then there's all the credibility problems, detailed there. Ultimately, she's a really flawed candidate, whom even insane amount of Koch brothers' money hasn't been able to rescue, and which has been keeping her below 40 percent in the polls. Still, she's been able to outspend Peters 2:1, largely thanks to the Kochs. Closing that gap could help Peters widen his lead.
