Received this e-mail today from Shenna Bellows' (D. ME) U.S. Senate campaign:
After a recent house party, an older woman approached me. I had just finished talking about our retiree crisis and my support for expanding and increasing Social Security benefits. “I’m one of those seniors,” she told me. “Sometimes my check doesn’t make it to the end of the month, so I put off filling a prescription. I haven’t done any repairs on my house for a while. I figure it won’t fall down before I die. Carpenters don’t do charity work.”
In these tough economic times, the need for such help is greater than ever before. In 2013, 1 in 5 Americans received Social Security benefits - not just retirees, but families who needed to fill the hole left by lost wages due to old age, disability or death. Children, widows, the ill - millions of Americans depend on these benefits to help them through the tough times.
Our country is at a crossroads. More seniors than ever before will enter retirement in the years to come, almost half of whom have no savings or income to sustain them in their "golden years." As times have gotten harder, our benefits have not kept pace. It's time to increase Social Security benefits for our seniors. Social Security has fulfilled its promise in the past, and now it's time we upgraded the system so that it can offer to current and future generations of retirees the benefits they've rightfully earned.

The time to step up is now. The senior who approached me is just one of millions who are struggling to get by. And just as we've made a promise to our retirees and our fellow Americans, Congress now needs to make a promise to us - that it will expand Social Security and increase the retirement benefits that are so desperately needed by millions of American workers and their families.
If you stand with me, if you believe we should care for our seniors and our neighbors in a fiscally responsible and socially responsible way, add your name to my petition here.
