Trumpmentum!
On Tuesday, the Mexican media company Televisa said it would not send a contestant to this year's Miss Universe pageant, making Mexico the first country to pull out of Trump's contest in protest of remarks he made about Mexican immigrants. Televisa oversees the national pageant that selects Mexico's representative at Miss Universe.
Trumptacular!
Now the event no longer has any hosts, the latest fallout over Donald Trump's incendiary remarks about Mexican immigrants.
Professional dancer Cheryl Burke announced Tuesday that she will no longer serve as co-host of Miss USA next month, citing both Trump's recent comments and NBC's decision to cut ties with the billionaire. A short while later, a spokesman for NBC confirmed that MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts had also withdrawn from hosting duties.
Trump-a-doodle-doo!
Real estate developer Donald Trump said Tuesday that he filed a $500 million lawsuit against Univision after the television network severed ties with him last week.
Huh. It seems the person who based his campaign bid around the theory that he was such a shrewd businessman he'd have everyone from Mexico to China to ISIS begging for mercy was caught unawares by the discovery that people and businesses who are Not Him are free to play that game too. And he's not taking it well, announcing that Univision not wanting to play with him anymore is:
"in reality, a politically motivated attempt to suppress Mr. Trump’s freedom of speech under the First Amendment as he begins to campaign for the nation’s presidency."
No, Mr. Presidential material, the First Amendment does not ordain that you get to insult whoever you want and everyone else has to help you make money anyway. This is not how it works. If that's what it takes to convince you to stay in the Republican race, though, by all means go nuts with that. America needs you—if not as president, then at least as cautionary tale.
