Jeffrey Abrams
Jeffrey Joel Abrams admitted to sexually assaulting female patients during exams at the East County free clinic in El Cajon, California.
Investigators found more than 1,300 explicit photos on Abrams' phone, including an image of a very young girl. He ended up
pleading guilty:
Abrams pleaded guilty in July to eight counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person, three counts of sexual battery and one count of possession of child pornography involving pictures of an 8-year-old girl.
During the pre-sentence phase it was suggested that Dr. Abrams get 20 years in prison amongst other things:
A doctor who sexually assaulted female patients and took explicit photographs of them with his cellphone at an El Cajon clinic for low-income patients was sentenced Friday to one year of house arrest and five years probation.
Dr. Jeffrey Joel Abrams, 68, must also register for life as a sex offender and was barred from ever practicing medicine again.
[Bold my emphasis.]
Jefferey Abrams also has to stay away from all of the victims for 10 years. There are some who are, as you reading might be, surprised at what seems like a particularly lenient sentence:
"I can tell in the 30 years I’ve been doing criminal defense, it’s by far one of the most unique sentencings I’ve seen because these types of charges usually merit serious, serious prison time," said Marc Carlos, a criminal defense attorney in San Diego. "The recommendation here is 20 years, which you would expect under these circumstances.”
According to the victims' representatives however, this is enough justice.
Deputy District Attorney Kerry Conway:
"These individuals have already been victimized once and made it clear they preferred not endure the additional trauma of testifying during a jury trial," Conway said. "This plea agreement ensures they won't have to re-live the crime in court and keeps the defendant away from any potential future victims."
I will tell you now, that if this guy didn't look like the guy that
killed Cecil the Lion, and the victims were wealthier, this guy would be in jail for a lot longer.
