As a recent diary notes, the GOP elite are freaking out over the staying power of Donald Trump.
Why does Trump freak out the GOP establishment so much? It's not as if his platform is radically different from the rest of the Republican field. Really, it isn't. He just expresses it in a very explicit manner that pleases the GOP base - and scares the rest of America.
And it does. Scare the rest of America, that is. Pretty much every poll worthy of the name shows Trump doing the worst of all the GOP field against Hillary Clintonand Bernie Sanders. Whereas the other candidates tend to lose to HRC by a hair and beat BS with ease, Trump gets creamed by Hillary and edged by Bernie. This has been the case for months now. Even at her lowest point, when the members of the press were amplifying without pause or questions every piece of raw sewage Trey Gowdy (he who alters evidence and outs CIA agents) was feeding them, she beat Trump. (Except, of course, in the FOX News poll, as the RCP averages show.)
As I said back in August, if internal GOP polling showed Trump beating Hillary, Reince Priebus would be giving him foot rubs.
