The first state filing deadline for 2016 is on November 6, 2015.
There are five states that have their 2016 filing deadlines in 2015.
Currently:
• 34 of the 79 Republican Members of the House of Representatives who represent districts where President Obama got at least 47% of the vote currently are running unopposed
• 143 Republican Members of the House of Representatives currently have no Democrat running against them
• In many of the seats where we have candidates, those candidates do not have the resources currently to get their message out
• Ohio’s Congressional filing deadline is December 16, 2015 and currently 8 out of 12 Republicans in Ohio are running unopposed
I was tempted to call this post “What if one party didn’t show up?” the situation is so bad. Whether you are a Bernie supporter, a Hillary supporter, a Martin supporter, or a Larry supporter you care about getting their policy proposals enacted and our country headed out of the monthly human invented crisis the Republican in the House create.
A recent Vox article highlighted that though there is a lot of attention going on at the Presidential level our Democratic Party is in a lot of trouble down ballot.
We can do something about it. In the past one of the strengths of Daily Kos is the ideas and local activism of those who hang out here. As a result there is a massive knowledge base about local politics here and the comments sections of Daily Kos user diaries can serve as a Think Tank and an organizing platform all at once. Over the years candidates have been recruited to run here, Draft organizations started, debate questions have been brainstormed, and Netroots Nation was create all in the comments section.
Let us turn that power to recruiting candidates so no Republican goes without a strong Democratic voice. Let us give voters a choice.
Do voters in your area have a strong option to vote for? You can look up who is running or considering running here. If not, who do you think should run? What can you do to get a strong candidate to run?
