Hillary Clinton has made a running series of jabs based on a Bernie Sanders’ comment about shouting that did not mean what the Clinton campaign pretends it meant. That is a move worthy of Fox. In the last election, President Obama pointed out that small businesses could not have built the infrastructure that they depend on. Fox twisted it, and the Republicans took the hint. They even based the theme of their convention on the Fox lie. (Does anyone remember any body in the media pointing out that the Republican convention theme was a lie?)
No Democrat should go down that road. If simple morality is not sufficient motivation, the Clinton campaign needs to remember how much they owe to Sanders for energizing the base and how much they will need him and his followers if they win the nomination. Nor should the Clinton campaign think that they succeeded just because Sanders’ campaign manager responded to their attacks with a stupid statement that probably did mean what the Clinton campaign pretends it means. Goading someone into making a mistake is a good tactic only if one does not have to lie to do it.
On the other hand, the Sanders Campaign Manager's comment was tone deaf at best, and Sanders needs to go beyond his apology and fire his campaign manager. He has to remember how much he will need Clinton’s people in the event that he gets the nomination. Sanders needs to act, and Clinton needs to stop the silliness. It is NOT smart politics. It is a deceit. We’re Democrats, and we’re better than Fox.
