It is not the perception that he is a bully and a liar since those are his positives as far as the base goes these days.
I have put the video of his talk about addiction at the end of the diary. He has a deep understanding of the tragedy and the fact that addiction can ruin anyones life.
We have seen time after time that the Republican Party and the base have no sympathy whatsoever for personal failure "you get what you deserve" is their mantra. We hear this from one of the leaders in their polls often "they are weak". This makes it so much easier for them to mock and abandon those that fail and is the core basis for many of their policies. Their driving force is fear, because actually caring brings the realization of "there but for the grace of god go I".
If you say that you care, that a helping hand is due, then this is mocked and called socialism, only the strong are worthy. The discourse has become so warped and Christie holds the view of many old school Republicans, that merely thinking of helping is a sign of weakness.
We hear time after time that we cannot afford to help, we cannot afford to make their lives better, my reply has always been "we cannot afford not to".
Republicans have never had a problem with.
Laws that imprison millions for no valid reason apart from addiction.
Laws that leave millions with no health coverage.
Laws that bankrupt and kill because illness has struck.
Their response has always been, make the laws tougher and let the market exclude millions more from insurance.
To do otherwise is Un-American.
This has been preached from the highest pulpits of the land for decades by the GOP. We have seen even so called Evangelical base embrace them by abandoning their saviors words.
They have reveled in inequality, injustice and fear for so long now that it is ingrained into their very being and to show sympathy is an anathema.
Helping and understanding is considered a weakness and failing a crime, they have preached this for so long now that Christie's words will fall on deaf ears in the base. Some of us may applaud his words in the video below but to think this will help him overmuch in the GOP primary is misguided.
