It’s a common question, “What would Jesus Do?”
It immediately brings politics to mind because I have only ever heard that question when liberals question conservative friends and family about their lack of support for government safety net programs, aka welfare. I always thought the question a tad mean-spirited but chalked it up to my lack of understanding. After all, I am not a Christian myself though being raised in the United States by an Anglican and a Catholic, I certainly know what Jesus would do in just about any situation.
Jesus would help the poor. He would feed the needy. He would shelter the homeless.
And he would welcome refugees with open arms.
So why is it that many of my most openly Christian friends are the first to praise these American governors who would refuse entry to Syrian refugees?
Have these Christians forgotten the very roots of their religion? Or is their Christianity so weak that it cannot stand this test of faith? If there is a God and he is looking down on the world he has wrought, he is probably laughing in contempt at this moment in time. How well he knows the weakness of men.
It is no wonder so many of us are turning away from religion. We see hatred offered at every turn.
I know what Jesus would do - he would cleanse the temple. And then fill its empty walls with refugees instead.
