Remember that promise Trumpy-Trump made back in early September? The promise not to poutrage with a third-party run, but to take his lumps and back the winner of the GOP primary process even if it wasn’t him?
Well, we all knew he wasn’t going to hold to that promise. It was just a matter of time until he broke it. And it looks very much like that time has come:
Republican Donald Trump says he might run as an independent candidate for president in 2016.
The billionaire and former reality show star is leading the race for the GOP nomination for the
fourth straight month. But he says that if the Republican Party does not treat him fairly, he'll "see what happens" and consider running as an independent.
In other words: Stop trying to shove me out of the race — or else.
But you know what? I think he just might “or else” anyway. I really do.
Look at this dude’s ego. Omigod, Becky, look. at. that. ego. He’s already managed to confound the experts by scoring big with his unabashed gropings of the fear and bigotry glands of the GOP base. I mean, he’s not even trying to be subtle about it. The Rude Pundit described his style the best way back in August, but if I quote from RP it’d get me banned so I’ll just link to it here.
Does anyone here think he would not want to try to pull off what Strom Thurmond tried in 1948? Or George Wallace in 1972? What’s the GOP gonna do to stop him — cut him out from all future debates? (Heh. As if that’d stop him. It would just add to his already-overstimulated martyr complex.)
If Trump does go third party, he peels off enough of the vote from Jeb Bush (who I still think is going to get the GOP nomination, along the lines of how Kerry won the Democratic one in 2004 after the Last Man Standing primary) so that Mike Dukakis could win for the Democrats. Yeah, even if he sat in a tank.
