Police in standoff with possible San Bernardino shooting suspects

Officers have reportedly engaged in a short chase and exchanged shots with people who match the (vague) description of the suspects in the San Bernardino mass shooting. Aerial coverage shows a dark SUV stopped with at least one door open and police cars surrounding it from a distance as SWAT vehicles arrive. MSNBC reports that one and possibly two suspects have been shot and are in the SUV. 

In a press conference, police said that the number of fatalities has remained at 14 while the number of people wounded has risen to 17, and confirmed an active scene involving a dark SUV.

Reports—as always, highly subject to change—suggest one dead suspect, one suspect arrested, and a third still inside this SUV. However, there’s still no official confirmation that these are the suspects in the earlier shooting.

A San Bernardino police spokesperson said of the suspects, one is down (but she would not confirm if he was dead), one is being “dealt with” and that if there were three shooters, one is on the loose.

Police are confirming that two suspects “are down,” and that a third person is on the run. There is a massive police presence, along with dogs, tactical forces, and so on, reportedly doing house-to-house searches. Bear in mind, it will be dark in California in about 45 minutes.

Deborah Feyerick, the CNN National Correspondent said she was told by police that the suspects were armed with AR-15s. This semi-automatic rifle is capable of very rapid fire even though it requires one squeeze of the trigger for each shot. Magazines capable of holding 20, 30 or even more bullets are common. Starting in 1989, owners of AR-15s and various other semi-automatic “assault” rifles in California were required to register them. New sales of such weapons were banned.

Chief Jarrod Burguan gives an update at around 5:35 PM PT, saying two suspects are dead—one male and one female. They were both armed with “assault style clothing” and handguns and assault rifles. One officer was wounded but sustained non life-threatening injuries. 

FBI spokesperson David Bowdich confirms that there’s a third suspect but he does not know “the disposition” of that suspect.

Multiple news organizations are reporting that one of the dead suspects in today’s mass murder in San Bernardino, California, is Syed Farook, an American citizen.
