Jake Tapper to Rubio on marriage equality: 'You’re the candidate of yesterday'

CNN's Jake Tapper taps into one of the big head-scratchers regarding Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's forward-thinking candidacy—he's so behind the times.

You are casting yourself as a candidate of a new generation, but there is an issue where you are very out of step with younger voters,” Tapper said, citing a Pew poll that showed 61% of young Republicans are in favor of same-sex marriage.
“On that issue, same-sex marriage, Senator, you’re the candidate of yesterday,” Tapper declared.

Rubio was asked almost exactly the same question by MSNBC's Kasie Hunt Tuesday. His standard response is to avoid talking directly about the fact that he doesn't support marriage equality. Instead, he turns to the question of who should determine the marriage laws: the states, in his view. Here's part of his response to Tapper:

That is an issue that will largely be determined at the state level since the marriage laws have always been defined by the states.

Rubio might want to ask the U.S. Supreme Court about that. The justices seem to think they have the authority to weigh in on the issue, with oral arguments to come in just a couple weeks.
