What you are not free to do is impose your beliefs on others. And you absolutely, unequivocally, unconditionally are not free to use the force of a government office to impose your beliefs on others. But a County Clerk in Kentucky has been doing exactly that, and it has made her the newest icon of the religious right. She’s an unlikely proponent of Christian family values, having been married four times. But, hey, you have to make a stand somewhere. Kim Davis just decided to make her stand with someone else’s marriage.
Again, it’s straightforward: you chose to run for an elected office and now find that your personal beliefs no longer will allow you to fulfill its duties and responsibilities. So, resign. You put a winning campaign together, so you are not in poverty and needful of concessions to keep the only job you can find. You are living off the taxpayers – including the gay ones that you refuse to serve. You are a representative of the State of Kentucky who refuses to abide by the law of the land. So, step up and do the right thing: resign.
If Kim Davis had any conscience, let alone as much of one as she keeps talking about, she would have resigned to begin with and not be demanding special accommodations as an elected official. If pundits and commentators had any conscience, they would not be suggesting that we sweep this under the rug with special accommodations. And if Kentucky politicians have any conscience, they will not provide special accommodations.
Resign.
