In an interview, Joe Manchin has said that he will support Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. This is now the 2nd time in 10 days that Senator Manchin has broke with party leadership, the first being when he criticized Senator Harry Reid (NV) for criticizing Trump. This is all too familiar for Democrats, as we have dealt with this many times during the years of Joe Liebermann.
In my opinion, while going down to 47 seats would be unfortunate, if Manchin is going to be a part of party leadership and buck it at the same time, he is not helpful to the Democratic Party now or in 2018, where he is sure to face stiff competition in his re-elect in West Virginia. I know that party purity is not something we should strive for and is something that I don’t support in fact, but when you signal to the base of the party that you are okay with a racist, KKK supporting, homosexual bashing AG, you are no friend to Democrats or progress.
It’s time for Joe Manchin to be out of party leadership and not be sent a single dime in his re-elect. Let him run as a Republican, as he seems to prefer to vote like one.
