Obama deserves blame for appointing Comey in the first place

Why on earth did Obama appoint a republican (who donated to McCain and Romney) as director of FBI?

I am one of those people who never understood Obama’s efforts to be bipartisan and friendly to republicans, attributing them less to naïveté and more to a weird desire to appease people who despise him. By 2013, when Obama appointed Comey, Obama has been shat on by republicans for almost 5 years. So why would he appoint one of them to such a key position? And yes, i realize that back then it was difficult to predict that a director of FBI could influence the election in such a dramatic fashion but still why appoint him in the first place?
