Note, CNN has released a statement by RNC which contends there was “no talk about king”.. so let me explain this, for those who are lay and why I will not change the title. In many Christian denominations, the celebration is marked as the “newborn king” or, “the king of kings”.
The sentence structure provided offers none of that.
“Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King.”
“just as..” so, “similar to” when three wise men, “the good news of a new king”.. so, let me explain something. John Kennedy and several other politicians were decried for whether or not they were Catholics first ahead of president of the country. This message isn’t even about that. If RNC had wanted to send a specific Christian message, they should have said “newborn king” or “the king of kings”.. putting out a statement such as this is either a complete error on their party to be this poorly structured or, it welcomed the people who would interpret it incorrectly.
PS- For a party that claims Christian roots, they could also be aware the three wise men weren’t there for the birth. They were traveling to get there, and came later. Just to pass on to the RNC, that is specifically Matthew 2:1-12.
