Sometimes things get lost in the mix. With Rep. Gabbard’s resignation from the DNC, South Carolina, and Clownface von Fuckstick taking three out of four primaries, looking back at what candidates say is playing second fiddle with one string. However, it’s vitally important to understand who your candidate is and where their political ideology comes from. Hillary Clinton on NPR in an interview with Scott Simon in 1996:
SCOTT SIMON: I mean, did you ever back in the ’60s, between when — I believe you were a Goldwater girl —
HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right.
SCOTT SIMON: — and whenever you became politically –
HILLARY CLINTON: That’s right. And I feel like my political beliefs are rooted in the conservatism that I was raised with. I don’t recognize this new brand of Republicanism that is afoot now, which I consider to be very reactionary, not conservative in many respects. I am very proud that I was a Goldwater girl.
There’s your “progressive who can get things done”. A proud Goldwater Republican. The first Presidential candidate to implement the Southern Strategy. Yes, I’m fully aware that Secretary Clinton was a teenager when she campaigned on behalf of Goldwater. I’m also fully fucking aware that she remained proud of her roots when asked about them 32 years later.
When are we, as Democrats, going to realize just how much we’re getting played? Hillary Clinton celebrates her conservative roots. DWS has handed the GOP win after win in the last three elections. Democrats ran so far to the right of Obama in 2010 that they were nearly indistinguishable from their Republican counterparts. What the fuck, friends and neighbors?
We can do better. And we can get there by electing Bernie Sanders our next President.
