Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus:
The liberal bias alarm is sounding. Ted Cruz, a Republican senator from Texas, just became the first Latino candidate to win a presidential caucus or primary, and conservatives are complaining that the mainstream media is overlooking the achievement.
"Where is the media on this, right?" Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus said Tuesday in an interview on Fox News Channel. "I mean, this is a big deal."
Aside from the fact that as a Cuban-Canadian, Cruz’s “Latino” experience is at odds with the vast majority of US Latinos, and also aside from the fact that everyone fucking hates Cruz, so no one will give him any benefit of the doubt, fact is that Cruz has done everything possible (short of changing his name) to run away from everything that makes him a Latino.
Not only does he viciously attack immigrants and demand their ouster from the country, but he refuses to speak any Spanish, calling bilingual education a “language ghetto”:
“When my father came over here penniless with $100 sewn into his underwear, thank God some well-meaning liberal didn’t come put his arm around him and say, ‘Let me take care of you. Let me put you on the government dole [and] rob you of your self-respect. And by the way, don’t bother to learn English. Let me keep you in a language ghetto,’” Cruz said. He said the traditional “American dream” is being destroyed by letting people use their native languages and grow dependent on government aid.
This was the same father who, as a Cuban, could stick around without worrying about immigration authorities picking up him or his family or his friends and deporting them—a courtesy neither papa Cruz nor Ted care to consider for anyone else.
For a party that has made demonizing Latinos a key plank of their platform, it’s rich for them to suddenly demand props for something they never earned, for a candidate so disliked by all Americans and Latinos specifically.
Cruz is a self-loathing Latino who rejects both his culture and the issues that motivate his community, and is also a member of the party that viciously attacks the Latino community for maximum political gain. That’s the bottom line.
It’s true! Cruz is the first Latino to win the Iowa caucuses. But don’t expect anyone to celebrate.
