Alternet has an open letter by Michael Moore to Ivanka Trump. There’s some unavoidable snark in it, but a great deal of simple concern for someone who is destroying himself before our eyes — and feeding a dark hunger in America.
Dear Ivanka:
I’m writing to you because your dad is not well.
Every day he continues his spiral downward—and after his call for gun owners to commit acts of violence against Mrs. Clinton, it is clear he needs help, serious help. His comments and behavior have become more and more bizarre and detached from reality. He is in need of an intervention. And I believe only you can conduct it.
Now maybe you can take this as concern trolling on an epic scale, but there’s a lot in there that rings true regardless of where anyone stands.
Take a look.
UPDATE: Judging by some of the comments, there are a number of people who automatically dismiss anything from Michael Moore. Several cite Moore’s warning that Trump will win as evidence that he should be ignored. Well, Moore has changed his opinion on that — see the third paragraph where he refers to Hillary Clinton as president.
Try this: pretend someone else wrote the letter, and just read it. It sounds like it’s coming from an America where there are still sane people, where the kind of things that have gone mainstream this campaign season are recognized as being beyond the pale. Sure there is some snark to it — but also some real truth.
Donald Trump has a core of supporters who absolutely know the press is against him, the poll numbers are faked, the election is going to be stolen from them, and America is going to be destroyed when that happens. What are they going to do come November?
It’s doubtful Ivanka Trump will take Moore’s advice, but having his own family talk Trump into stepping down might be the best-case scenario however unlikely that is. Trump is just the face of a larger problem. Republicans have spent the last 4 decades promoting the idea that Democrats can never legitimately win elections or govern the country. We really need to give thought to an intervention on a massive scale.
