Kansas Legislator Walks Off, Forgets His Loaded Gun In Committee Room

Well, sometimes things are just embarrassing. Kansas Legislator Willie Dove, who left a committee hearing unhappy with some of the language being used, left behind something important: a loaded gun.

Rep. Willie Dove, a Republican from Bonner Springs, left the handgun in the House Education Committee room on Tuesday after departing the hearing when a colleague disparaged Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos to be secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.

Dove remarked it was simply an accident:

The Capitol Police took possession of Dove’s gun and placed in a lock box overnight. It was returned to the representative on Wednesday, prompting Dove to express interest in securing the weapon with a shoulder holster rather than having it strapped to a leg.

“I regret it happened,” Dove said. “I would characterize it as being careless on my part. I took the weapon off my ankle and set it under the desk. That was it.”

The state of Kansas was scheduled to debate the issue of concealed carry today, SB-53, a bipartisan bill to overturn a previous law allowing for guns on college campus environments.
