Following an avalanche of criticism and mockery for saying “There has been no oppression in the last 100 years that I know of,” former NFL player and Super Bowl winning coach—not to mention an ardent supporter of Donald Trump—Mike Ditka wants to clarify his remarks. It turns out that it was (drumroll) all about "the context":
The characterization of the statement that I made does not reflect the context of the question that I was answering and certainly does not reflect my views throughout my lifetime. I have absolutely seen oppression in society in the last 100 years and I am completely intolerant of any discrimination. The interview was about the NFL and the related issues. That's where my head was at.
The “related issues,” of course, were NFL players protesting against police brutality, social injustice and—wait for it—oppression. So clearly he was totally taken out of context.
And if that clarification wasn’t enough, Ditka added:
I'm sorry if anyone was offended.
Uh-huh.
