Disgraced white supremacist and former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, Joe Arpaio has lost yet another one of his “legacies”: the cruelly conceived “Tent City” prison has been closed. The Arizona Republic reports that the prison, opened in 1993, is no more.
Tent City, Maricopa County’s infamous outdoor jail, quietly closed for business this weekend. Its remaining inmates were taken from the 7-acre compound in southwest Phoenix late Saturday night and checked into the county's Durango Jail a few blocks away.
The inhumane and humiliating conditions at the prison, along with the general sense that anything Joe Arpaio touched had the stench of fascism and bigotry—along with tons of lawsuits—led acting Sheriff Paul Penzone to announce the closure of the prison a couple of months ago. If there is a hell, Joe Arpaio will spend his eternity inside of one of his tents.
