We don’t even have a location name yet. Niger is a fair-sized country. On the Niger-Mali border doesn’t really narrow it down. But something happened “there” that led to a dozen US soldiers walking into an ambush, four dying and apparently one being left behind by a belated rescue mission. Or maybe not. The President sure isn’t talking, other than fighting with the family of the guy who apparently was left behind.
CNN has an overall story here, but not asking the serious questions.
Initial reports suggested
the 12-member US team was leaving a meeting in unarmored pick-up trucks when they began taking fire from small arms, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, according to a US defense official.
…
Sgt. La David Johnson was separated: A large-scale search-and-rescue operation involving US, French and Nigerien troops was launched soon after US officials realized one of the US service members was unaccounted for.
…
His body was recovered in a remote area of the northwestern African country by Nigerien troops nearly 48 hours after he was discovered missing in the wake of the attack, according to US officials.
Some people aren’t buying the official story.
I really don’t know if these Tweets are the true story. A public investigation is obviously called for, and will be fought every inch of the way and derided on the grounds of “the memory of the troops” or some other nonsense. What we need is some fucking accountability, and we need it now. And start with the name of the place. Everywhere there are people has a name. “Somewhere in Niger” just doesn’t cut it.

Also, we may have a name for the investigations to come, Tongo Tongo. As always.. we don’t know for sure. Because our govt doesn’t want us to know. The “bad hombres” already know, so withholding info only hampers honest oversight.
