It’s 2017 and our country is being run by racists. The president condemned “both sides” (Nazi and anti-Nazi) in response to the deadly Charlottesville attacks. Chief of Staff John Kelly called traitor and Confederate General Robert E. Lee—who fought for the right to keep enslaving human beings—“honorable” and whitewashed the Civil War’s history by saying it was about “compromise,” not slavery. And Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who seems okay with being the mouthpiece for this racist regime, doubled down on Kelly’s statements as she asserted that no, Kelly’s statements are not offensive because a “compromise” totally could have prevented the Civil War.
Since it’s so unclear just how racist you can be and still occupy the most powerful political positions in the country, reporter April Ryan had an interesting question for Secretary Sanders yesterday.
What was the response? Well, we’ll have to wait to know what the administration really thinks.
It’s perfectly possible that Sanders didn’t hear Ryan as she was leaving, but the fact that this is now a reasonable question to ask a White House spokesperson in 2017 shows just how deeply entrenched in white supremacy our administration is.
