I sat down to comment on the diary of a liberal Christian who felt that atheists on Daily Kos were being intolerant and obnoxious. I believe that we should respect all faiths. And as Democrats, we can certainly not afford to push away any decent human being of voting age. So, atheists cut it out!
And then I felt my own rage, boiling to the surface. But let me first say, I grew up happily in a Black Church tradition, and I’m grateful for that spiritual base that infused my life with meaning. I’m also pleased to see Black church leaders at the forefront of political change.
However, I am enraged by the utter amorality of Trump-supporting white Evangelicals and disappointed by the silence of “liberal Christians” in refusing to do or say a damned thing about these miscreants. “They’re not our problem, because we don’t practice that form of Christianity”. What cowardice. What a damned cop-out. You see the face of Satan having taken over your religion — and the best you can come up with is complain because some folks aren’t nice to you, although our fragile democracy has been nearly stripped to the core, and the lives of countless people have been destroyed. I don’t mean to use Christians as a scapegoat. But I’m only asking a question for further reflection. Why don’t sane Christians and the wealthy, highly-organized church that represents them bear any responsibility for the destruction of our nation under the banner of white evangelical Christianity?
