Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York nailed Attorney General Jeff Sessions during his testimony Tuesday for the raw hypocrisy he has demonstrated regarding his failing memory of both his own contacts with Russians and those of other Trump campaign aides.
Jeffries first established Sessions' consistent claims of severe memory loss, noting that Sessions testified not recalling certain events under oath 29 times in October testimony, 36 times in June, and at least 20 times to that point in Tuesday's hearing.
He then noted that Sessions had skewered Hillary Clinton just last year for potentially perjuring herself by intentionally failing to remember things. Sessions has previously had a rather unforgiving stance on perjury—before he was addled by the memory loss he’s experienced ever since being offered the post of the nation's top law enforcement officer.
Jeffries reminded Sessions that during President Bill Clinton's impeachment proceedings in 1999, he gave a speech on the Senate floor explaining why he would vote to impeach Clinton.
“In it, you acknowledged that while serving as U.S. Attorney, you once prosecuted a young police officer who lied in a deposition," Jeffries noted. "And in that speech, you decided to prosecute that young police officer even though he corrected his testimony."
Hmm, remind you of anyone?
Jeffries continued:
Now, you testified under oath before the senate judiciary committee in January. You subsequently corrected that testimony in a March 6th written submission and have been forced repeatedly to come back to the senate and now the house to clarify. When explaining your vote on the senate floor to remove bill Clinton from office, you stated that you refused to hold a president accountable to a different standard than the young police officer who you prosecuted. Let me be clear. The attorney general of the United States of America should not be held to a different standard than the young police officer who's life you ruined by prosecuting him for perjury. (emphasis added)
Jeffries yielded his time back at that moment, which drew Sessions into a string of defensive denials.
It was beautiful. Watch the video below.
