Why don’t Trump’s supporters see their man as a traitor, now that the evidence of his ties to Russia is becoming nearly irrefutable? Why is the GOP doing everything in its power to undermine the Mueller investigations?
It is because the Cold War is over and the preoccupations of this right-wing sector of the American electorate believes that through Trump’s leadership, it can find a global ally to restore the once unassailable dominance of the magnificent white race. That ally is, of course, the Putin regime in Russia. It’s a fanciful connection that will collapse in the end, leaving the Americans stuck in a pile of gold-plated manure. But it’s real in their minds. Be prepared for the fact that it has even putrefied the reptilian brain stems of GOP Congressmen, desperate to hold onto power by any means that they can.
Trump’s witless followers are being played by the Russians. But stupid people looking for solace in all the wrong places is the dictionary definition of a patsy. And why would anyone look to Vladimir Putin as their savior? If you haven’t already done so, you should read the March 2017 Atlantic article: It’s Putin’s World How the Russian president became the ideological hero of nationalists everywhere. In one segment, Steve Bannon was quoted as saying: “We’re at the very beginning stages of a very brutal and bloody conflict. . . fight for our beliefs against this new barbarity that’s starting, that will completely eradicate everything that we’ve been bequeathed over the last 2,000, 2,500 years.”
During the Charlottesville Neo-Nazi in October 2017, one popular refrain was “Russia is our friend.” For white supremacists it mirrored the goals of militant Russian nationalism, the linking of ethnic dominance to the greatness of the state. Casey Michel, writing in The Diplomat observes:
And much as Trump has aped the rotted, regressive policies of Putin-friendly leaders throughout Europe. . . so, too, has he helped give a national platform to the groups and movements that have not only fueled a resurgence of white nationalism in the United States, but who have gone out of their way to praise, of all international leaders, Putin.
