Perhaps a repugnance to sexual harassment in the work place will be a bridge that links GOP women to us. But thus far I don’t see the evidence that Trump’s female supporters have abandoned him wholesale, although the outcome of the Roy Moore election in Alabama will tell us what we need to know in that regard. In any case, as serious as these issues are, I fear that too much feminist discourse at the present time might be ignoring the larger power dynamics of white American society.
It occurred to me, in reading the comments of feminists who wanted to throw the book at Al Franken, that some truly believed our side might gain support among GOP women by showing non-partisanship. But I don’t believe the fascist right works that way. In any case, is there a feminist strategy for dealing with Trump’s female supporters? I’m more than a little irritated at the cop out every time I hear these women being dismissed as mind-controlled victims of patriarchy. We’re all human. We all have agency.
