The United Health Foundation issued their report on pregnancy mortality rates in America and the news isn’t surprising — states which have put serious road blocks into a woman’s ability to access care in the name of “pro-life” policies have doomed women to a higher mortality rate than states where services are available.

The United Health Foundation’s 2016 Health of Women and Children Report pegged the national average at about 19.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, while Missouri’s maternal mortality rate was 28.5 deaths per 100,000 live births, which ranked 42nd nationally. Kansas clocked in at 19.6 and states like California (5.9) and Massachusetts (5.8) were well under double digits.
Missouri’s rate is about on par with Belize, and worse than poorer countries like Moldova (23) and Costa Rica (25), according to the CIA’s World Factbook.
These rates represent serious problems with access to healthcare in America, and the upcoming passage of the Republican Tax Plan? It will make it even worse.
Research provided by American Health Ranking’s website provides a scary lesson to Americans, but the map leaves little doubt — women in the south and areas of the Midwest are at highest risk of pregnancy-related mortality.
In some cases, the number of women who die during pregnancy outstrips even third world nations.
While Missouri’s rate of mortality is high enough to be seen as comparable to Costa Rica, there are 8 American states — and you can guess by looking at the map, that performs far worse.
The constant drumbeat among Republican governance in these states talks about anti-choice stances they label as pro-life.
But, when the numbers come in, what you get is a society where the life of women certainly can’t be figured in.
