I haven’t seen this on Dailykos yet, but Crain’s Chicago Business is reporting today that President Obama yesterday in public remarks seemed to compare what’s happening with President Trump to the rise of Hitler in the 1930s. Their story is headlined, Invoking the specter of Nazi Germany, Obama warns against complacency.
This is terrifying.
My wife and friends and I have been comparing Trump’s rise to Hitler’s for months, but we’re nobodies. And we were always sort of hoping we were just joking when we said it.
When Obama, the politician I admire most in my lifetime, makes the same comparison, suddenly it becomes very real and not a joke at all. When Obama says it, I believe it.
Here’s what Obama said during a question and answer session at the Economic Club of Chicago:
The danger is "grow(ing) complacent," Obama said. "We have to tend to this garden of democracy or else things could fall apart quickly."
That's what happened in Germany in the 1930s which, despite the democracy of the Weimar Republic and centuries of high-level cultural and scientific achievements, Adolph Hitler rose to dominate, Obama noted.
"Sixty million people died. . . .So, you've got to pay attention. And vote."
Obama did not mention Trump’s name. But who else could he have meant? This is getting really scary. Yikes!
I see The Hill has picked up this story, too, now.
