I finally made it to a Doug Jones rally. This rally was held in Cullman, Alabama. A real bastion of farmers, mostly of German ancestry. Usually a reliably republican stronghold. So I was pretty surprised to arrive at the Stone Bridge Browne Center to see the parking lot full, with News trucks parked everywhere.
It’s a beautiful venue, used for weddings, and other special events. Also a pretty large hall, probably about 300+ people there.
The Doug Jones signs led the way into the hall. The crowd was calm and very upbeat. I didn’t even see one security officer. There were no protesters, and during the entire event it was cheers, clapping, laughter, and no outbursts or anger.
The first speaker was Lily Ledbetter. She is an Alabama native, and was one of the first women to endorse Doug Jones for his US Senate run.
I noted a pretty big crowd of gray hairs. There were some twenty somethings, and middle age as well. But the majority of folks were of the elder category. The crowd looked more like what you would expect of a bunch of republicans. They may of been republicans once upon a time. But this crowd was solidly in support of Doug Jones, and what he would try to bring to Washington. Which is reasonable solutions to real world problems, and not a bunch of rhetoric or empty promises, or false religion.
Another guest speaker was Marsha Folsom, the former first lady of Alabama. One thing she said that really stood out to me was that Doug’s opponent was a Shyster. The crowd strongly agreed, and she had some chants going of No More, pretty loud and strong.
I also got to hear from Doug’s very cool wife Louise Jones. She was funny, and sincere, telling the story of their relationship and how they arrived at this place, in this time.
Finally, Doug stepped up and presented his case to a standing ovation and cheers. He seemed so together and calm, with clear conviction in his voice. He was totally capable and confident. I could easily see him as Senator Doug Jones. He is ready for the job. He was funny, and intelligent, very approachable, humble and very human. We are 5 days out and Doug Jones is ready, He is ready to go to Washington and get to work. He has ideas, he has integrity, he is honest.
Alabama knows a person of quality. They know what a shyster is too. They will not be fooled. Sure there are about 30% of the population that is hopeless. But there are also a great many Alabamians who are not going to fall to lies of the rich and powerful. The real people, the ones who choose to educate themselves. who care about the future, their kids, and not just surface arguments that are just a weak attempt to divide the populace.
Doug Jones is ready to go to Washington. Alabama is ready to send him there, and by god I think we will on December 12, 2017.
GOTV is strong this time around. Let’s use these last 5 days to tell anyone you know who lives in Alabama, 18 or older, registered to vote. to get out there and vote for Doug Jones for US Senator for Alabama. Check with the campaign if you need a ride to the polls.
