This is a quick post showing an interesting pattern of 2016 presidential voting in New York City, where election districts (aka precincts) with predominantly female voters went for Clinton by more than 90%.
Overall, female voters made up 57% of the NYC electorate. There are about 5000 election districts in NYC. Taking only those districts with more than 100 voters to ensure reasonable statistics, in some such districts female voters outnumbered male voters by 3:1.
Here’s a scatter plot of Clinton percent vs. female percent in the election districts:
So that’s an interesting pattern, with detailed interpretation anyone’s guess. Most striking is the relatively high number of districts where female voters outnumbered male voters by 2:1 or more and where Clinton got over 90% of the vote.
Right off the bat it’s a fair bet that any district with 90%+ Democratic vote is a minority district. So a pretty safe conclusion is that the high female districts are in minority neighborhoods. Here’s a map of the districts that had >63% female vote:
...and here’s an ethnic map of NYC:
The pink areas above are the largely black neighborhoods, which correspond pretty well to the election districts with above average female vote, along with perhaps latino neighborhoods.
So it’s striking that not only do women make a significant majority of NYC voters (57%-43%) but also a significantly higher fraction still in minority neighborhoods.
