Some of you may have heard of the kerfuffle Todd Rundgren got into, by telling Trump supporters to not buy tickets to his shows. Most of the Trumpistas flew off the handle, saying Mr. Rundgren was ‘too good for them’, ‘elitist’, or other such deprecation of character.
Todd Rungren basically laid it out on the line. He’s not catering to their political worldview, and to the contrary, he’s got at least one song in the set list (shown as a prerecorded video shown during a costume/set change) that’ll definitely piss them off. In fact, before he stated that this wasn’t a show for Trump voters, he had more than a few of them attend, they get upset at the song, got into vocal fisticuffs with other attendees, and disrupted the shows. Thus, he said, ‘don’t come to my show, guys, you won’t enjoy it.’
So… here’s what the fuss is about. “Tin Foil Hat” by Todd Rundgren featuring Donald Fagen.
The lead vocal (and some of the songwriting/arrangement) is by Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, another band that’s never shied away from wrapping cynical or pointed lyrical barbs within solid and hook-filled musical arrangements.
Lyrics, in case you’d like to sing along (I do):
He's coming down the escalator
With a girl from east of here
He wants to make the country greater
We've got nothing left to fear.
Because the man in the tin foil hat
Is sitting on the throne tonight
It kinda feels like a coup d'etat
But it's gonna be great, tremendous, amazing, and all that.
Because the main the tin foil hat
Is tweeting like a teen age girl
He puts the Pluto in plutocrat
But it's gonna be a huge, yuge, hyuge new world.
He hasn't got the time for losers
Unless they do as he commands
He's writing texts to his accusers
With those tiny little hands
Because the man in the tin foil hat
Is sitting on the throne tonight.
Kinda feels like a coup d'etat.
But it's gonna be a huge, yuge, hyuge new world.
Because the man in the tin foil hat
Is gonna drain the swamp tonight
And fill it up with alternative facts
And it's gonna be great, tremendous, amazing, and all that
The two wrote the song when they found they had a mutual disgust for Trump’s antics during the campaign. Thus, it really only concerns the campaign/first 100 days scandals, including the “donations” to then Attorneys General Ken Paxton (Texas) and Pam Bondi (Florida) around the time the Trump U lawsuit/investigations were ongoing. The video features chyrons regarding Trump’s White House cabinet picks, and is presented by a certain discredited FOX commentator (perhaps it’s a relative.)
I, for one, find it hilarious.
