The last 24 hours in Trumpland have been a whirlwind of legal madness. First up was the news late Thursday that his vice president has enlisted a high-priced D.C. attorney to deal with the Russia investigation. Next up, Trump went on a crazy tweetstorm and inexplicably confirmed he is the target of an investigation.
Then his campaign sent a letter to his 2016 campaign staff ordering them to preserve all records.
And now comes word that Trump’s longtime personal attorney, Michael “Says Who” Cohen, has also hired his own outside counsel to deal with the investigation. Even the lawyers are getting lawyers.
Katy Tur also reported Cohen will testify before the House Intelligence Committee:
Pence and Cohen weren’t the only members of the Trump 2016 campaign to suddenly putting their lawyers on speed dial. From the Washington Post:
Cohen’s decision is the latest indication that the Russia probe overseen by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is intensifying and could end up focusing on a number of Trump associates, both inside and outside the White House.
Michael Caputo, a New York-based political operative and radio commentator who served as a senior communications adviser on Trump's campaign, also has hired a lawyer of his own to navigate the Russia probe.
Caputo has retained Dennis C. Vacco, a former New York state attorney general and a partner at the law firm Lippes Mathias Wexler Friedman. His hiring also was first reported by NBC's Tur.
Buckle up. This investigation appears to be gaining steam each and every day.
