Greg Gianforte, the Montana Republican who assaulted a reporter on the eve of his election to the House, is trying to show he’s grown and changed and taken responsibility. Except he’s totally full of crap:
“I can’t erase it, but I did do everything in my power once the event was over to take responsibility,” he said.
Everything in your power once the event was over to take responsibility, eh? So why is it that your campaign’s initial statement tried to pin responsibility on the victim, claiming that reporter Ben Jacobs “grabbed Greg’s wrist, then spun away from Greg, pushing them both to the ground”? Is that doing everything in your power to take responsibility? Or by “once the event was over,” do you mean “once the election was over”?
A Montana television affiliate points out that Gianforte’s guilty plea might limit what he can do, at least until he completes his sentence. If he’s held to the same standard as people who aren’t wealthy members of Congress, Gianforte wouldn’t be able to hold a security clearance, go to the White House, or get a concealed weapons permit in Montana.
But taking real responsibility? Gianforte is miles away from that.
