Arizona Democrats are enthusiastically signing petitions to encourage Commander Mark Kelly to run for the U.S. Senate.
Kelly, the husband of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, is a retired astronaut.
The White Mountain Democrats joined with Flagstaff Indivisible and grassroots groups throughout the state in asking Kelly to run for the seat currently held by Jeff Flake, who is in trouble both with the hardline TEA party base and with ordinary Arizonans.
The picture was taken Sunday at a combined White Mountain Democrats and Indivisible meeting in Pinetop, AZ.
Flake is rated as the most vulnerable member of the U.S. Senate. Mormons usually make up an important share of the right-wing base in Arizona, but are cool to Trump. Senator Flake has deep ties to the LDS community, being the great-great-grandson of William Flake, who founded Arizona’s most Mormon community.
Unable to reconcile his base, Flake is also unpopular with more moderate elements in Arizona.
“Flake is viewed unfavorably by roughly half of Republicans,” Breitbart wrote in reporting a recent poll. “Thirty percent view Flake favorably, while 49 percent view the senator in a negative light.”
