Thank you, Jerry Seinfeld ! Remember the notorious “Soup Nazi” Seinfeld show episode ? Well because that’s deeply embedded in pop culture, it’s now a potent tool for persuading Denise Morrison, the CEO of the Campbells Soup Company, to resign from Trump’s business advisory council.
The key Twitter activity is happening under the Hashtag #SoupNazis, and Campbells goes by a number of tags, especially @CampbellSoupCo and @Campbells .
Regular Daily Kos readers will have no problem pointing out the resonance between Campbell’s implied support for a presidential administration with numerous links to neo-Nazism and white supremacy & the #SoupNazis label.
But wait ! - there’s more — the Campbell’s Soup is officially a “Purpose Driven” company, I was startled to learn, and here’s why that’s significant :
Rick Warren, author of the gazillion copy bestseller The Purpose Driven Life has repeatedly & very publicly praised the dedication of the Hitler Youth — As I covered back in ‘09 in a story with the title “Follow Jesus Like Nazis Followed Hitler, Rick Warren Tells Stadium Crowd”. The story has two embedded videos showing Warren doing his Hitler Youth thing, and notes that he put it also in a book he wrote prior to the Purpose Driven Life.
So by branding itself as “Purpose Driven”, Campbell’s is now pulling that nasty Warren baggage in tow.
The optics here could hardly be more atrocious, and I think pointing these things out on Twitter, using #SoupNazis and @CampbellSoupCo / @Campbells might persuade the soup giant to back off. It’s worth a try.
