Trump and Falwell Jr. have a lot in common. Both had fathers who built multi-million dollar organizations that they took over and exploited far better than their fathers’ could have dreamed. Both are lying, manipulative sellouts who harness people’s needs, fears or the desire to be “part of something” to make themselves richer while they blame the same people they use.
But today, Falwell showed his blind support of Trump. When asked about Trump’s comments from Tuesday, Falwell re-worked Trump’s words and continually repeated the claim that he thought Trump did call the KKK, Neo-Nazis, White Supremacists domestic terrorists (which he clearly did not). He also claimed that Trump was right when he said that there were “very fine” people in that group, his evidence? He floated this ridiculous claim that all Trumps supporters cling to whenever Trump talks out his ass: as the president, Trump has information that we’re not privy to. In this case, the information said there were “very fine” people marching with the KKK, Neo-Nazis, and White Supremacists.
Finally, Falwell says he thought Trump was right on target and spoke from his heart, which was refreshing to him, compared to the previous administration, who spoke in measured terms, He thought Trump hit all the right notes with his comments UNTIL he spoke with the president of a historically black college and a rabbi from a local synagogue. It was only after speaking with them that he could see how Trump’s words could have not been taken positively. He said, after speaking with them, he understood how having armed Neo-Nazis shouting “Jews will not replace us!” outside of the local synagogue could have come across as intimidating!
Trump and his ilk are always claiming the Elites are out of touch with middle America. How out of touch are you if you can’t see that armed Neo-Nazis hanging outside a synagogue might be intimidating? How about several hundred people marching with torches, like the KKK used to. Can’t you see that might be intimidating to some people? It should be offensive to ALL people; that’s called empathy, not elitism. The quicker conservative white Christians recognize that no minister should be a milllionaire — Christ himself said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a wealthy man to get into heaven; Falwell doesn’t believe in what he preaches, or he’d worry about not getting into heaven — he believes in the bible about as much as Trump does (“2 Corinthians, anybody?).
The White Evangelical Churches need hold their leaders accountable. Kudos to the former graduates of Liberty University who are returning their diplomas. The “students” of Trump University at least got their money back; I hope a reputable college offers replacement degrees for the legitimate coursework that Liberty students really did, maybe Donnie’s alma mater.
