I support a government option for healthcare. Let me repeat that again. If you want to the government to be the provider of your healthcare, I support and will work with you to make that happen. I will pay higher taxes to see that everyone in this country has healthcare coverage at a reasonable cost.
But all these demands that I support single payer and nothing else is a big leap of faith for me as a woman. You are asking me to put faith in the government (which changes control often) to have my best health interest in mind. You are asking me to let the government choose what it considers a core health necessity that they will cover.
Have you not been paying attention to what the Republican’s have been doing? They would love nothing more to have a single valve to shut off women health’s care. Don’t believe me. Were you under a rock over the uproar over covering birth control? And how exactly is single payer going to get around the Hyde Amendment.
I can hear your answer now...supplemental insurance. Why? Why as a woman must I pay for additional insurance because the government wants to play football with my core health needs.
Say I don’t have maternity insurance (and that would absolutely have to become a thing) because I wasn’t planning to get pregnant and find myself pregnant. Oops...that was an expensive mistake.
I’m not the only member who would see their “controversial” or “non essential” healthcare become a political football.
Giving the government sole control works when the members of that society are in agreement about the core services that are provided. Unfortunately half this country is a bunch of religious nuts that think they should have unlimited say in other people’s bodily autonomy.
And no offense but I have zero faith in my side either. To often...my rights are up for sale if you can get x voter.
Universal healthcare should be the goal. Once stop playing with my rights, I am all for single payer.
