Consensus is growing. Along with about 15 Democratic senators co-sponsoring Bernie’s Medicare-for-All bill, there are nearly 120 co-sponsors in the House for John Conyers’ Medicare-for-All bill. They include 4 Democratic blue dogs.
Of the bill's [then] 113 current cosponsors, four are members of the conservative Democrats' Blue Dog Coalition. Two of them — Mike Thompson and Lou Correa — represent districts in California, which has been leading the state-level push for a single-payer health program, though the proposal was blocked recently by the Democratic leadership.
The other two Blue Dogs cosponsoring Medicare for All are from the South. Vicente Gonzalez, who was elected last year to represent South Texas' 15th Congressional District, signed on on April 17. Jim Cooper, who has represented Middle Tennessee's 5th Congressional District since 2003 and who served its 4th Congressional District from 1983 to 1995, signed on on April 25. Both seats are considered safely Democratic.
Medicare for All wins backing of conservative Southern Democrats
An idea whose time has come. When some Blue Dogs are howling in favor, we are reaching a Democratic Party consensus. Time to get on the right side of history.
Current list of 117 co-sponsors of Conyers' Bill
Update I: As Senator Shaheen joins as co-sponsor, I think we are up to 16 senators.
