Fox contributor Robert Jeffress, a megachurch pastor who has conversations with God that you and I are not privy to, told Fox & Friends today that the Big Guy upstairs supports Donald Trump’s repeal of DACA, as well as a wall along the US-Mexico border. The president’s “evangelical advisors,” some of them Hispanic clergy, encouraged Trump to protect nearly 800,000 Dreamers, but Jeffress told Fox viewers that his colleagues are simply confused about the whole “Christian compassion” thing:
“But while Christian compassion is one consideration, it’s not the only consideration in the immigration problem. I mean, the Bible also says that God is the one who established nations and its borders.”
So, God works for the Border Patrol, not the churches that, in His name, set out water in the desert so immigrants won’t die. Jeffress went on to say his fellow hand-layers on Trump “are sincerely confused about the difference between the church and government” and “we need to keep those roles distinct”—says the religious nutball who advises a U.S. president. Duh!
Happily for Robert Jeffress, God believes the same things he does, especially about immigration: “God is not necessarily an open borders guy.” Yup, he said that. Forget about Moses leading people across borders in God’s name, forget about Joseph and Mary birthing an anchor baby in a strange land, forget about Jesus’s treks across many open borders, forget about countless biblical verses Jeffress conveniently ignores that command us to care for others, including immigrants.
None of that matters, Jeffress sez so. God also wants a 15 percent corporate tax rate.
