During a Wednesday night meeting, Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi said they found common ground with Donald Trump on a legislative plan to provide legal protections for some 800,000 Dreamers. The Washington Post writes:
In a statement, the White House described the meeting as “constructive” and that it focused on “tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade.”
“The Administration looks forward to continuing these conversations with leadership on both sides of the aisle,” the statement added.
But aides familiar with the exchange said that Trump and the party leaders agreed to move quickly on legislation to protect the roughly 690,000 people protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that is set to expire in June.
In a statement, Schumer and Pelosi said they had “a very productive meeting at the White House with the President. The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.”
Importantly, the information provided by the White House appears to generally match the joint statement issued by Schumer and Pelosi, though some outlets noted that the White House statement was more muted. Naturally, the question is: Will Trump wake up tomorrow the same person he was at the meeting? For now, he appears to be interested in pushing through a DACA fix in relatively short order, though the White House pushed back on the notion that Trump caved on his precious border wall.
Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that if Trump and Democrats do manage to push a bill providing legal protections for Dreamers through Congress, it would arguably be the first piece of major legislation Trump signs.
We'll believe it when we see it... and we hope we do.
