Received this e-mail today from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D. OR) in support of Doug Jones’ (D. AL) U.S. Senate campaign:
We have an opportunity we can't pass up.
Thanks to a twist of fate in Alabama (yes, really, Alabama!) we have a chance to win a Senate seat for Democrats.
On December 12, there's a special election to pick the permanent replacement for Jeff Sessions. Normally, this would be a pretty safe Republican seat. But these are not normal times.
- The Democratic candidate is Doug Jones. He's a former U.S. Attorney most well-known as the prosecutor who sent two former Klansmen to jail for bombing and killing four young African-American girls in an Alabama Baptist church.
- The Republican candidate is Roy Moore. He's the Alabama Chief Justice who was suspended once for refusing an order from a federal court to remove the Ten Commandments monument he installed; and a second time for refusing to recognize marriage equality as the law.
Moore is such an extremist that many Republicans won't vote for him. During a custody dispute in his courtroom, he said that gay people are not fit to be parents. He used terrible slurs to refer to Native Americans and Asian Americans. He even perpetuated "birther” lies about President Obama and called Islam a "false religion.”
We must do everything we can to stop Moore from adding a Trump-like voice to the Senate.
With all hands on deck, we can win back this seat for a Democrat who will fight for equality, for a clean and healthy environment, for Planned Parenthood, for a livable wage, and for affordable health care.
Let's make sure Democrats coast to coast know about this one: Chip in $3 now to stand up and be counted for Doug Jones for Senate!
The people of Alabama deserve a Senator who will work for them, not the Breitbart-Steve Bannon machine that is bankrolling his campaign. Let's send a special message to Donald Trump and all of the Republicans in the Senate that Democrats are fired up and ready to take back our country.
Chip in $3 now and let's get it done!
Jeff
