[I]n calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.
Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he'd been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. [...]
Another person familiar with the calls said Trump told Pelosi her coverage was even better than his. “The press has been incredible,” Trump said.
Ratings, baby! He doesn't care what policy he supports, as long as the people on his teevee screen are talking about him doing it afterward!
This is a double-edged sword, of course. It means Donald Trump is, and always has been, easily manipulated by advisers and others who can convince him that this or that policy is the one that will get him the most positive TV coverage. But it also means he will willingly support a completely contradictory policy a few weeks later, if another aide or adviser or hanger-on or, sigh, hamburger commercial convinces him reversing course will gain him a new round of praise from somebody else.
