Too soon?
Scott Pruitt, the EPA Administrator, says that we shouldn’t talk about climate change while Irma is bearing down on the US. That’s absurd. If we waited until there was no polio to start working on preventing polio, there would still be polio.
The cancer of climate denial.
Big tobacco denied the connection between smoking and disease for years. Put it down to a corporate addiction to profit. They enlisted malleable scientists, venal politicians, and pro-business shills to promote their alternate truth.
Now the same motley crew is waging war against climate science. None louder than Rush Limbaugh. And then came Irma. At first, he called it a liberal hoax. But, as the hurricane headed inexorably toward his Florida bunker, he could no longer deny the truth. And the bloviator packed his bags and fled.
But left behind were those who put their faith in this denier and his assurances of safety. Much as once many smokers stayed with the habit based on a lie.
Churches and 'others'.
Donald Trump tweeted that, "Churches in Texas should be entitled to reimbursement from FEMA Relief Funds for helping victims of Hurricane Harvey (just like others)." Three thoughts: One, churches don't pay taxes. So isn't that a prepayment on the charitable work they do? At the very least it's a stick in the eye of the Taxpayer who does not share their religious beliefs. Two, talking of beliefs, what about temples and mosques? And three, what exactly are 'others'?
Embarrassing white people.
White supremacists are misleadingly named, as they prove – repeatedly. Take the case of an irate white Canadian and her unhinged rant. The target of her stupidity was Jagmeet Singh, a candidate for leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party. Her beef was Singh’s supposed love for ‘Sharia’. What this mentally unsuperior woman failed to grasp is that Singh is a Sikh. And as such has no more regard for Sharia Law than his cretinous accuser.
In doing so, she went to the default position of the intellectually vacuous: “They all look the same to me”. Or in other words, “If it ain’t white, it ain’t right”. Singh is cut from a finer cloth. Despite their adversarial ad hominem, he offered reassurance: “We welcome you. We love you. We support you … we believe in your rights.”
