Seething with rage this weekend about racist Trump and the ever-complicit GOP? Here’s something productive you can do right now.
February 13th is the final—and best—chance to chalk up a needed win before the November elections. If you can’t volunteer, you can still donate.
Florida Dems LOST the other two special elections last year—BOTH were in districts Hillary won. Combination weak candidates, GOP juggernaut, and ….. we didn’t show up to vote.
So what’s different in Legislative District 72, which is essentially Sarasota? First, it’s a higher bar to climb---it went 5% to Trump. (Although Democrat Bill Nelson has won this district every time for two decades.)
But we have something we didn’t have in the other two times:
- A more motivated base
- A really kick-ass candidate
How kick-ass?
Margaret Good is now WINNING.
Margaret is crushing her GOP opponent in fundraising. She raised TWICE as much money as her opponent last reporting period.
Her college-educated, independent-leaning district is prime for the taking. Although GOP has an edge on registered voters (50k-40k), the non-party affiliated are +35K, and they are none too happy these days. Plus, we should have an edge with likely voters.
Another indication of the threat she is? The GOP is pouring money into the race, making vicious attack ads and sending out misleading mailers.
The ads attack Margaret for doing her job as an attorney (She defends people accused of crime---yeah, ALL attorneys do that—it’s called the Constitutional Right to Due Process, dumbasses) and for being a liberal (expanding Medicaid? protecting IMMIGRANTS from non-white countries??)
Her opponent is James Buchanan, who is the son of the Vern Buchanan. If you are outside of Florida, you might not have heard the Buchanan name. Here in Florida, it is synonymous with corruption. Vern Buchanan, according to the nonpartisan watchdog group Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington, has been rated as one of the most corrupt politicians in Congress for several years. He has been investigated by the House Ethics Committee, FEC, Justice Department, and the Office of Congressional Ethics over multiple, separate allegations of campaign finance misconduct. He has also been sued by six former employees alleging fraud and personal retaliatory actions.
At least with Vern, however, I have something to say. Do know what can I say about his son, James Buchanan?
Nothing--and that’s exactly how James wants it. He cancelled his public appearance in November, and his campaign manager announced that he will not participate in ANY candidate forums! He seems to love talking to donors---but voters? Not so much.
There was even a trending hashtag: #WhereIsJamesBuchanan
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Margaret has been doing everything I expect a candidate to do: meeting voters, participating in multiple debates, answering questions, and NEVER hiding from her potential constituents.
Vern’s son, on the other hand, has been relying on his name recognition and the GOP juggernaut to carry him to victory.
Due to gerrymandering, it will take at least until 2020 for us to have a realistic shot of overturning the FL House, but that can’t happen unless we start winning the very winnable districts. It starts with Margaret’s victory over the entitled son of a perennial, corrupt politician.
