When Donald Trump looks out over the audience of his State of the Union address at the end of this month, he’ll see the face of Cindy Garcia, an American whose life and family has been torn apart due to his cruel mass deportation policies:
Too old to qualify for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections, the dad of two was deported on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Despite Trump’s claims that his mass deportation force is targeting so-called “bad hombres,” Garcia had no criminal record, “not even a traffic ticket”:
At the airport on Monday morning, a group of friends and supporters from UAW 600 and the advocacy group Michigan United turned out with Garcia and his family, some carrying signs reading “Stop separating Families.” They watched quietly as the family said their goodbyes. Video of the tearful scene was shared widely on social media.
Trump lives in a fantasy world where enablers help shield him from the destruction of his policies and from his critics. But at least in this one instance, thanks to the actions of Congresswoman Dingell, he won’t be able to avoid this one.
