Yep, there's a tweet for every moment ... and sometimes there's even video! Here's Donald Trump last August brandishing the threat of a government shutdown in order to force Congress into funding the wall he promised Mexico would pay for.
“Now, the obstructionist Democrats would like us not to do it, but believe me, if we have to close down our government, we’re building that wall.”
Of course, out of sheer spite and stupidity, Trump himself spiked the bipartisan DACA deal last week that did include $1.6 billion in funding for his precious wall.
So now he wants Americans to think the real issue with shutting down the government is all about military funding.
On Thursday, he tweeted, “A government shutdown will be devastating to our military ... something the Dems care very little about!” He made similar comments to reporters during a visit to the Pentagon a few hours later.
Naturally, Trump's not only lying, he's wrong—it’s a twofer! Active-duty service members are among those exempted from the shutdown. Additionally, it's the GOP defense hawks themselves who are opposed to this short-term funding bill. Lawmakers like Sen. Lindsey Graham say that constantly passing these continuing resolutions (CRs) is hamstringing the military because it doesn't give the Pentagon the opportunity to plan for the future and/or allocate money for new projects. That’s why Graham, among others, opposes the current CR, which will be the GOP’s fourth since last spring.
"Eventually, you gotta say ‘no,’” Graham told reporters Wednesday. “I don’t want to shut the government down, but you know it’s killing the military. It’s the worst way in the world to run the military and the government in general."
