Without missing a beat, Trump puts the country (and probably most of the world) into a state of unyielding anxiety.
During a speech on Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated:
“The United States should know that the button for nuclear weapons is on my table,” according to a translation by the Associated Press. Kim also claimed those weapons are capable of reaching the entire U.S. mainland.
Tump replied in kind.
“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the “Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.” Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!”
We have two crazed world powers playing tally-wag with ‘who’s got the biggest one.’ Except they’re not talking about their penis sizes (or perhaps they are just a little), they are talking about their ability to destroy each other’s country, and thus—the world.
On Tuesday night, renown and respected journalist Dan Rather posted a Facebook comment about Trump’s reply to Kim Jong Un. The legendary newsman censured the blatant irresponsibility of Republican Party.
“Donald Trump’s tweet on North Korea (the one you’ve probably seen where a President of the United States plays “mine’s bigger than yours” like a schoolyard taunt but about nuclear weapons) is so far beyond any norm of advisable presidential behavior as to define reason.
What can be said that has not already been said a thousand times? Except that it keeps getting worse and more dangerous. Do you ignore these ravings? Do you try to deprive a petty bully of his Twitter oxygen? Does the world take it seriously? Do they take the United States seriously? Will that help protect us from the sheer import of this perilous rhetoric? What does it say that we have to hope for restraint from a murderous dictator in return?
As with so much of the Trump era there are always more questions than answers. And a couple final ones to put this moment in context. Will the rest of the Republican Party continue to normalize this behavior? And will we look at this administration as an aberration in America’s march to progress or a dangerous portent of our future course?
I for one remain optimistic that most Americans see this for what it is and President Trump and his supporters may pay a political price because of it.”
Singer-Songwriter and regular Twitter activist Ricky Davila (@TheRickyDavila) tweeted:
“In a normal American society, a raging lunatic accused of sexual crimes touting the most dangerous weapon known to man on Twitter to taunt a murderous Dictator because of personal insecurities thus risking millions of lives would be cause enough for immediate removal.” -Ricky Davila
Joy Reid seems response is one of the most poignant in regard to the plight of this country— and the absolute shamefulness of the Republican Party.
Many believe the Republican Party is as much to blame for what Trump does—as Trump. The GOP House could have, and should have, started impeachment proceedings the first month Trump was in office. God knows Hillary Clinton would have been in prison by the end of the first quarter for doing a snippet what Trump has done. Yet Trump continues to avoid paying ANY consequences. In fact, the GOP continues to empower him in order to get complete the own self-serving—with no care for the people of this country or the world. It’s about pleasing the corporate donors who’ve helped made GOP members multi-millionaires. This country has become a pressure cooker that could blow at any moment, with a man in the Oval Office who thinks the destruction of countries— a game.
California Senator Ted Lieu tweeted a reminder of a bill he’s working on.
It’s now about staying involved—when the last thing you want to do is stay involved. It’s about holding on to the hope and knowledge that we as a nation are stronger together than one party or one deranged and dangerous lunatic in office. And it’s about taking action.
